April Flowers Prompt #4: Something Blue
Title: Something Blue
Author: mrstater
Rating & Warnings: rated PG-13 for innuendo
Characters/ Pairing: Caz/Betriz
Prompt: #4, blue
Format & Word Count: triple-drabble, 300 words
Summary: Caz reveals himself to be a student of fashion.

When they are alone, at last, after the dancing and the feasting and, of course, the wedding, Cazaril tells her she's a beautiful bride.

"So you've said!" Betriz dimples. "What do you like best? Besides me, in my gown."

"In a moment, you, out of your gown," Caz replies, surprisingly bold, in husky tones.

Betriz shivers, slightly, when his callused fingertip brushes her skin as it trails along the slightly tarnished silver jeweled necklace draped over her collar bones.

"My mother wore it on her wedding day," she tells him, in answer to his questioning look, "and before her, my grandmother. An heirloom of the house of dy Ferrej."

Caz unfastens the clasp and moves on to finger the diamond and pearl-encrusted hoops that dangle from her earlobes and tinkle like miniature temple bells whenever she moves.

"Those were a wedding present," says Betriz. "You know from whom."

She warms under her husband's longing gaze, the same he wore last night when he gave the earrings to her; as she takes them off, his fingers move on to trace the intricate patterns in the train of lace cascading from her headpiece to the floor.

"You've seen that before," Betriz says. "At Iselle's wedding."

"If you weren't wearing it at Iselle's wedding," Caz replies, "then I didn't see it."

His fingers release the pins that hold the veil in place; it flutters to the floor like a swarm of butterflies descending upon spring blossoms, as Cazaril's fingers find the flowers tucked among the ringlets of her hair.

"Knight's spur!" His smile is delighted, and Betriz returns it.

"In Daughter's blue," she says.

"We'll leave those in," Caz says.

Betriz lifts an eyebrow. "You like them best?"

"Didn't we already establish that I like you, not in your gown, the very best?"

Mmm, it's lovely to see Cazaril being bold, and so happy. And how can Betriz possibly resist those things he says? ;) (Loved the quip about if you weren't wearing it...then I didn't see it -- well played, Caz!)

Thanks very much! I wrote a couple different versions of this and settled on this one because it seemed like the most complete story, but I wasn't entirely sure it worked. Glad you liked amorous!Caz. :)

This exactly reminds me of the Caz who, once the betrothal had been established, pulled Betriz -- what was the original phrasing, "not at all shyly"? -- onto his lap. :)

I second all of this! This drabble made me squee. We get such tantalizing hints of Caz and Betriz's romance in the novel, and by the time the reluctant Cazaril gives in to the inevitable the book is over. ;_;

Also, I think you nailed the characters right on the head! Bravo!

I'm delighted you found this in-character! Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment.

Very nice. It had me smiling the whole way through. My favorite lines were these:

"So you've said!" Betriz dimples. "What do you like best? Besides me, in my gown."

"In a moment, you, out of your gown," Caz replies, surprisingly bold, in husky tones.

I'm so glad this made you smile. And your review made me smile, so thank you. :)

It's hard to tell who is more entranced with this Cazaril: Betriz or me! Apart from enjoying this glimpse of their wedding night and the happy, seductive banter, I really like how you've worked the 'something borrowed' in with the headpiece from Iselle, and how the theme of spring is woven into the descriptions as well as Betriz's hair.

it flutters to the floor like a swarm of butterflies descending upon spring blossoms

That's a lovely image and this is a lovely read. :)

Aw, I'm glad you like amorous!Caz! This was fun to write, and I'm so pleased you noticed that I'd worked in "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue," because I was afraid people would have to squint too hard to see it!

Very pleased you liked my butterfly description--you know how I always feel I struggle with good imagery, and it means a lot coming from you of the dark eye sockets! ;)

Thanks for reading and commenting. :)

Not sure I have anything terribly coherant to say about this, beyond 'Awwww'. ;)

I will try though: this is very nicely paced and structured, and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. :)
